The EORTC was created in 1962 by Henri Tagnon and a few pioneers who foresaw the need for establishing a European research structure to develop cooperative clinical research. It was named GECA: Groupe Europeen de Chimiotherapie Anti-cancereuse which in 1968 became the EORTC (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer).
The aims of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) are to develop, conduct, coordinate, and stimulate translational and clinical research in Europe to improve the management of cancer and related problems by increasing survival but also patient quality of life.
There are 20 EORTC working group (including Head & Neck Cancer Group and Pharmacology & Molecular Mechanisms Group). Recently Professor Martin Schlumberger proposed to open new EORTC group that will work on endocrine cancer (thyroid, adrenal cancer). That group is plan to closely cooperate with ETA and ETA-CRN.
Each year about 5000 patients are enrolled to about 50 trials, that are open for recruitment.
List of open EORTC trials can be found online
